Could New York city reduce its taxi fleet by 40% if its residents shared cabs ?

An article in the New York Times (September 1, 2014) titled “If 2 New Yorkers Shared a Cab…” suggests that 40% of the current 13,5o0 cabs in New York City could be eliminated, along with the associated road congestion is riders in close proximity shared cabs to destinations. The analysis was done by a team at MIT that analyzed data regarding 172 million rides collected by New York’s Taxi and Limousine Commission.  Will such efficiency generated by sharing, the associated cost benefit and sustainability impact be sufficient to get customers to share cabs ? How much additional ride time would passengers be ready to tolerate per dollar saved and energy saved ? Will riders need to be certified (rated) as acceptable or connected through social networks to increase adoption ?

  1. Cab pooling is definitely a very good idea keeping in mind the road congestion and the environmental issues. However, to make this idea a reality, right incentives should be put in place. The right incentive might be a robust tracking mechanism to measure the number of times a New Yorker has gone for cab pooling in a particular year and accordingly, grant him a tax subsidy. Also an integrated mobile application is an essential element to connect commuters going in the same direction.

    Cab sharing seems like a very promising idea, but the 40% seems very un-realistic. First, as mentioned in the article people chose cabs because of the convenience and the private ride, otherwise they would choose to take public transportation. Sharing cabs would best be utilized for transporting people from and to popular destinations, but isn’t this what public transportation aims to do. Second, individualized culture in New York is not a good platform for this type of system. I believe other cities may be more open to this idea, such as San Francisco or Austin.
